About

Photomicrography by Ivan Amato

I am a science and technology writer, editor, communicator, podcaster, and public-engagement professional based in South Orange, N.J. My work is driven by this platitude:

The greatest gift science has to offer humanity is the opportunity to experience awe as science reveals how nature works.

In addition to publishing books, I have written and edited for many publications, among them, Time, Fortune, Discover, the Washington Post, Technology Review, Nautilus, Quanta, Science, Nature, Science News, Science, and Chemical & Engineering News. I have worked as a consultant for the President’s Council of Advisors for Science and Technology (PCAST), the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation, the Chemical Heritage Foundation, the Materials Research Society, among others. I have done broadcast stints with National Public Radio and Discovery Communication’s Science Channel. I also created and hosted the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency’s first podcast, Voices from DARPA. In recent years, I have introduced a live channel communication into the mix by founding two science cafe series: DC Science Cafe in Washington, DC, and Cafe KITP in Santa Barbara, CA. I have played managerial roles for several roles, including a four-year stint as managing editor Chemical & Engineering News. In addition, I am a public speaker on a range of subjects, including science, technology and communications, and an organizer and facilitator of panels, talks and other public engagements.

Thank you for the attosecond article. I wish I’d become acquainted with your work sooner. The clarity and enjoyment that shines through your science writing soothes my brain in these troubled times. I hope to read much more from you.
